Geronimo was born in Arizona near the Gila River. Geronimo was not his actual name but more of a nickname given to him. His real name was Goyahkla meaning, “One Who Yawns.” As Geronimo grew older he was never a chief, but he was an influential leader and medicine man. His tribe the Chiricahua Apache was one of the smallest Apache tribes. Geronimo disliked the mexicans near his tribe very much ,for they killed his mother, wife, and his three small children.
Geronimo is most famous for being the most feared indian leader of the 19th century. He already disliked the mexicans very much for the murder of his family, so he began to attack many villages. He even joined the presidents church to have him favor him. He swore to give up drinking and gambling. Geronimo was baptised and saved. He was later kicked out of the church though, for the continued gambling.Geronimo was invited to go to the 1904’s St. Louis World Fair. Again the people used him as a form of entertainment. Even though he was the entertainment he said he enjoyed the fair and he was paid, but he was under army guard the whole time. He was later hired at Pawnee Bill’s Wild West show under the army guard, still. This show made the indians seem murderous and savage. In the show Geronimo was made a chief ,but in real life he never was a chief. This show paid well but he got involved in gambling and drinking yet again. Later in life he was invited to Theodore Roosevelt's Inauguration parade. He and other indian chiefs road horses as a sign that they were no different from the whites.. Geronimo received time to talk to the President. He asked to go back to his homeland without his guard. He got very angry when the president refused him of this and was removed from the meeting to be sent back to Fort Sill. The president did let Geronimo tell his life story
