There is always a new diet fad, it seems, every other day- but what if the newest trend diet was more about actual health than striving for a so- called “perfect body”? There is one that stands out above the others. The Gluten Free diet has been gaining popularity in the past few years, so much so that it’s become a controversial topic among some people. But the boost in press has brought to light some very important issues some people face: allergens that people face everyday, and not just ones to gluten.

I love that the diet is gaining popularity because it sheds light on the people who have special dietary needs, which, years ago were not being met, and now they are- to some degree. Years ago, I could maybe find one brand that sold gluten free pastries, something not naturally gluten free, restaurants who claimed to have a gluten free menu turned out to be a chopped head of lettuce with some dressing, and of course; no croutons. Now there are entire aisles in stores that contain gluten free products, restaurants are making special meals to fit these dietary needs and wants. All of this due to the fact that people are mainstreaming the diet, as they believe it to be a healthier option to what they’re eating. But eating a gluten free chocolate bar over a regular one does not make you healthier. A true gluten free diet means sacrificing a lot of your favorite foods- which probably happen to be horrible for your body anyways-, you end up eating more natural foods, like fruits, meats( not deep fried), and vegetables. If done right, yes, this diet can a much better alternative to the lifestyle most Americans eat these days. But that’s not what they’re doing; they’re eating the same junk, only it doesn’t contain the gluten protein. If people were educated about how to eat healthier in general, their gluten intake would reduce dramatically anyways, as the foods that contain the most gluten happen to be the
