“Stay in school kids!” that’s what parents all say to their children . However, the hard reality is that it’s just not that simple. Many obstacles get in the way that make it a necessity to leave school before graduating . According to Missy Remiss’s Radio Interview, 21 states and Washington DC are now increasing the dropout age to 18, but that’s just not right. A family’s and a student’s own personal issues should take first priority in their life, so if they happen to be 17 and they need to get an extra job to provide for their family they should be able to leave for as long as they need to. Sadly, even if someone has the best family in the world, family issues pop up. Whether it be financial issues or a sickness, all family issues hurt and the extreme ones can cause damage, in physical, mental, and emotional ways, if not taken care of. For example, in Source 1, which was a personal letter from a girl named Marissa to her Grandmother, she stated that she would “spend the day getting to school and back and feeling helpless” before quitting school and going to work full time to help her family. Even before a storm hit and damaged her school, according to Marissa’s letter, “[her] dad wasn’t working, and [her] mom has only been able to find temporary and part-time work”, meaning that work was scarce and the two people that were supposed to be providing for her while she was getting her education couldn’t. It’s only normal that she would not only feel obligated to help but also find herself in a position where she would need to. So, as family issues tend to, her family issues made their way into her own life, affected her, and caused her to need to leave for a bit and get her life together. Even if this situation seems extreme, it really isn’t, and because of that by making students stay in school until they’re 18 limits them and prohibits them from doing other activities that could benefit them to a greater
