Group Synthesis of Interviews: What Digital Learners Tell Us

My high school educator group interviewed students, parents and teachers. From the information provided, we ascertained what students like and dislike about today's schools and what changes they would like to see in the classrooms. Educators often talk about how to better meet the needs of today's learner; yet they rarely invite students to the conversation. We want to give students a chance to articulate what changes they would most like to see in their classrooms. We need to better understand the student’s learning preferences and how they would prefer to be taught. Technology is ever-evolving. Educators need to be proactive to make the best possible use of the latest technological trends in their classrooms.

• The teacher of today needs to comprehend the various factors that fuel the digital divide and recognize that socio-economic factors are the central cause. Educators should consult with administration and School district before adopting BYOD (bring your own device) policies. It is always a good idea to get a formal “OK” before new technology policies are implemented because there could be potential ramifications that need to be addressed.

• Educators should instruct students in good digital citizenship and ethical behavior online. Teach students to be cautious, especially when giving out personal information online. Students also need to understand what constitutes cyber bullying and how it needs to be handled.

• Above all Educators need to listen to students. Our greatest resource is the digital learners we educate. Just as students utilize our lessons for higher levels of learning and performance, we need to absorb and learn from their technological expertise as
