Teamwork is the joint and effective effort of individuals who work together towards a shared and common goal. Teamwork in a healthcare setting is essential for the delivery of high quality, safe patient care (Leonard, Graham & Bonacum 2004). These dedicated multidisciplinary “teams” are consistently more effective than randomly assigning staff to different parts of the hospital (Epstein 2014, p. 205). In order for successful teamwork the it requires effective communication, which allows other members to discuss their opinion. The sharing of jobs is needed so everyone in the team has an equal jobs and contribution until the completion of the task. The mutual respect between individuals of the team is important as that is a sign of a healthy team as members can support each other and value each other’s thoughts and opinions. With regards to the sharing of jobs in a team, Leggat (2007) suggests that no single professional can deliver a complete episode of healthcare and that the teamwork is essential in the provision of healthcare. This explains that for the best treatment of the patient, requires the division of labour among the medical, nursing and allied health practitioners. The peer group work was important task for myself to learn further about teamwork and what is required for effective and efficient teamwork. The group was self-formed from other members of the class. This group work was very important for myself as a beginner to group work. However, from the participation of group work I found that these values that are part of teamwork as necessary for a successful career in healthcare. This essay will proceed with the key principals of teamwork, my personal experience, why teamwork is important in a clinical setting and an example of
