Gun Control Laws According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “More Americans will die of gun-related injuries in 2021 than in any other year on record”. Despite the rising numbers of casualties due to firearms, American citizens' rights concerning gun control laws has been an ongoing debate and issue throughout Modern American history. The first federal law to be passed by the government concerning firearms was the National Firearm Act, which was passed in 1934. Firearms subjected to this act were shotguns and rifles, “having barrels less than 18 inches in length,”, as well as machine guns, firearm mufflers and silencers. Some may argue that gun control laws impose on one’s civil rights due to the Second Amendment, and firearms serve as a form of protection for Americans. The other side of this debate argues that gun control laws are positive and more should be passed because of the deaths and injuries guns have caused in this country and overall guns are dangerous and overall just add more fuel to the fire. A common argument that is used against the passing of gun control rights is that restricting firearms goes against American civil liberties. This argument is due to the Second Amendment, which concerns the right to bear arms. The Second Amendment was “adopted to protect the right of the people of each of the several States to maintain a well-regulated militia”. It was also a response to the concerns raised during the ratification of the Constitution where citizens feared too much federal power and believed that creating a national standing army posed a threat to the sovereignty of several states.
