The enclosed document appears to be the Code of Hammurabi. The Code of Hammurabi is the first written and recognized codes of laws in history. These laws were intended to be a legal system for Mesopotamian civilization. The Code of Hammurabi consists of 282 laws that stressed Witness, Justice and impartiality, Judge- based decisions, Jury based decisions, Contract and dues process because these procedures give people fair judgment when it comes to punishment of the victim or the person accused. The city- state Babylon was located between the Tigris and the Euphrates River in Mesopotamia. According to Live Science, Babylon was the center of civilization in Mesopotamia [Livescience.com]. It was a major center for trading goods and new ideas according to Duksters.com. The code of Hammurabi also protects the interest of states. Each law was strict and absolute. Hammurabi set universal laws for all of the people conquered throughout the many territories [Class notes]. He felt that the laws were important to civilization because the gods were pleased with the way he put Mesopotamia and conquered regions in social order [Class notes]. The laws helped bring peace to the Mesopotamian Empire. The Laws also helped shape life in Mesopotamia as well. The Code of Hammurabi was influenced by the Sumerian Code; a set of laws put together by Ur- Nammu, which was the ruler of Ur, Sumer [History.com].
The original Code of Hammurabi is located in Musse de Louvre Museum in Paris, France [Class notes]. The Diorite Pillar inscribed with Hammurabi’s law was found by French archaeologist Jacques de Morgan and her expedition between the years of 1901-1902 according to truth magazine. Jacques and expedition rediscovered the Code of Hammurabi broken into three sections in Susa; an ancient city-capital of Elamite and what is now present day Iran [Truthmagazine.com].
