Has art helped decrease segregation in the United States? Yes. I am a naysayer. Art has brought a sense of belonging to many, as well as contributed to many great accomplishments like the start of the Harlem renaissance in 1920 that raised awareness to black artists and inspired many to this day. There were many artforms shown during the Harlem Renaissance, including music, paintings and plays. This shows that the power of dreams is to motivate people as well, all giving a sense of purpose to one's life by giving them a goal to accomplish. Our society has made it so far because of motivation and goals to help us reach our dreams, from Hamelton to MLK. The dreams got us to where we are today.

Georgia Douglas’ work truly displays that the power dreams acquire is to motivate people to achieve their goals. This is exhibited in her work throughout by using figurative language like “My heart against the ground.” It conveys the pain she has endured but yet still pushed through so she could follow her dreams and continue her life without defeat from giving up. She stated to the public that one of her dreams was to have her books on a library shelf one day. It depicts a large crowd of colored people, but one standing high holding a book that is radiating light. On the side of the painting are KKK members riding horses. I think it is saying that no matter if someone is trying to push you down, you have to ignore and rise higher. One of the reasons society has downscaled its racism is because of the common determination for equality. This determination and follow through comes from dreams of fairness. In Aspects of a Negro Life, this statement is displayed when we see a time of unequality and racism and a time of understanding on the other.
