The purpose of the article, “Healing presence”, by J. Godkin was to understand nursing presence and how it may result in greater patient satisfaction and healing potential. A key point of this article is that nursing presence is the core of the nurse-patient relationship. The article also describes five patient outcomes to nursing presence: 1) achievement of client goals, 2) satisfaction with nursing care, 3) comfort, 4) growth, and 5) enhanced healing. While the nursing outcomes are as followed: client cooperation resulting in ease and efficiency of nursing care, increased confidence in nursing competence, job satisfaction, and joy. Another key concept introduced in this article is a three-stage, hierarchical model of presencing in nursing therefore resulting in healing presence. The three-stages are bedside, clinical, and healing presence. The first stage is bedside presence which is establishing a relationship with the patient and being there for them. The author views healing presence through the model, I described above. Healing presence is a hierarchical model that I have never thought about before. The author’s viewpoints are very interesting and thought-provoking. I agree, that healing presence is essential for a healthy nurse-patient relationship. The patient and nurse both gain many positive outcomes from this vital interaction. This hierarchical model of presence, assisted me in improving my understanding of presencing. I love the stage approach to this model, as I will use it to ensure I give each of my patient the best possible care. Hence, healing presence is a concept that is beneficial to the nurse-patient interaction, as well as, the healing process of the patient.
