For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to become a physician. As I obtained more knowledge about becoming a physician, I was impressed with how much preparation had to be done to obtain this position. My urge to become a physician exploded when I attended the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s first African American male visit day. On that day, I discovered that the African American male entrance rate and application rate were decreasing at the medical school. This information encouraged me to seek out ways to improve my chances of acceptance. The program also provided me with valuable information about many pre-admission programs offered through the medical school that increase the chance of acceptance. My determination coincides with my ability to communicate well with others to facilitate a relationship based on common interests and kindness. Being able to form a relationship with a person is essential to create a lasting effect and positive memory. My communication skills are the main assets that help me show my interest and excitement for the medical field. Along with great communication skills, I am very determined. Determination has always been one of my greatest qualities. I believe I first demonstrated my determination when I was in fifth grade and I broke my femur very badly. My physician at Blaire Batson said it was a great possibility that I would not walk correctly again; however, I was determined to gain my strength back and overcome the obstacle that life had thrown at me at a young age. My determination was also exemplified when I was entering into my study abroad program in Rome. The cost of this program was exponential, but I was determined to apply for as many scholarships as I could to reduce the burden of paying the program cost out of my mother’s pocket. As a result, I was able to obtain all financial cost for the program. I would not have been able to obtain that goal if it were not for me being able to communicate effectively with several professors for their help and guidance with the
