Section 1: Select your age: Age 20-35- Young adult.
As a young adult, it is imperative for me to incorporate flossing everyday into my daily routine in order to prevent future consequences of gum disease, arterial inflammation and heart disease. The young adult period includes the age range between 20 and 35 and is the time to prepare and take on adult responsibilities, however for young adults in their twenties, like myself, low consideration is given to physical health and well-being (Edelman, Kudzma, and Mandle, 2013, pg. 538). This is because at this age, we are at the peak of our physical health, but at the same time, there is a lot of pressure on our mental and emotional well being due to the various changes and responsibilities thrown at us abruptly. The twenties period include a time with a lot of achievement-oriented stress, leading to obsessive work habits and little attention to sleep and well being. The stress of school and a future career for young adults, such as myself, causes us to forget about important, but overlooked, health habits like flossing every day. However, the idea of promoting health has been around us for as long as we can remember. Health promotion involves teaching the people about avoiding or decreasing risk factors associated with diseases that can be prevented. With proper knowledge, people can avoid disease and live a healthier life. By giving people the knowledge about oral hygiene and the risks of not flossing, they can implement that information to avoid diseases related to poor oral hygiene. According to Michael O’Donnell (1987), health promotion is the science and art of helping people change their lifestyle to move toward a state of optimal health, which aligns with my definition of health
