The High Middle Ages was an era in Europe from 1000 to 1300. The High Middle Ages were transformed by new ideas, innovations, and methods. The High Middle Ages were run by a feudal government that focused on the lords, vassals, and peasants. Vassals promised loyalty and military service to the lords as long as the lords agreed to, “protect their vassals in judicial disputes or against the attacks of others and usually provided them with something of material value, such as clothing and weapons, housing, money, or land” (Matthews, Roy T., et al. 228). Peasants were given a place to live by the lord in exchange for labor such as growing crops. The economy of the High Middle Ages . Farming innovations from the Carolingian period such as the three-field crop rotation began to be used more in the High Middle Ages. According to Matthews et al., “increasing the productivity of the soil brought economic benefits to the lord” (229). The lords can now pay the peasants in money and sell them land causing the economy to grow. More people began to demand luxury items in the West so it caused new trades routes to be opened.

The first cause was the Norman Conquest of 1066 when William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, conquered and became the king of England. The problem with this is that the king of England had the same power as the king of France. The second cause of the Hundred Years’ War was Henry II’s Angevin Empire. Although most of the land that was part of the Angevin Empire were fiefs, Henry II controlled more French territory than the king of France. The last cause of the war was the John of England was defeated by Philip II of France. The defeat of John caused him to lose Normandy and all possessions of France to Philip II making France more powerful than England. The constant disagreements and disputes between England and France over the years is what caused the Hundred Years’
