Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bombing The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan was not just a tragic day but it also had an effect on everyone worldwide. 350,000 people living in Hiroshima before the atomic bomb on August 6th, 1945 (Milam, 3). Approximately 140,000 died all together, some on the same day, and some later on within a 5 month period (3). The Nagasaki bomb (three days after the one in Hiroshima) was said to have killed approximately 80,000 people (3). Every person within a 1.2 kilometer radius were killed, with the exception of 2 (3). The ones that were killed were either crushed or burned to death (Barnaby, 24). The two bombs that were used in this bombing went by the names of “Fat Man” and “Little Boy.” Little Boy was dropped over Hiroshima while Fat Man was dropped over Nagasaki. Little Boy was 10 ft. long, 28 inches wide, and weighed about 9,000 pounds (Barnaby, 3). After the bomb exploded, it traveled about 4 kilometers every 10 seconds and 11 in every 30 second (24). The Nagasaki bomb missed its target by one mile (Bernstein, 27). If it would have gone 3 miles in the opposite direction, however, it would have killed nearly 1,000 American troops (27). Fat Man was the second bomb and exploded about 500 to 580 meters over Nagasaki 3 days after Little Boy (Barnaby, 3). The bomb was 10 ft and 8 inches long and weighed approximately 10,000 pounds (3). It was said to have contained 12.5 kilograms of TNT (2). Tsar Bomba was the largest nuclear bomb ever detonated (Milam, 10). Tsar Bomba was approximately 1.4% of the power output of the sun or 1400 times the combined power of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs (10).
