Have you ever wondered what happens to the heroes in war and combat, who dedicate their lives and honor to protect and save the lives of their nation? Where are they now, he said? A “veteran” will be defined as a person who was activated for federal military service and is not currently serving at the time of death (2020 National Veteran Report). Although many may think that our war veterans are well rewarded for their service, they are wrong. According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, here in the U.S. alone, “only 7% of veterans are eligible for government help and benefits, and 13% are homeless and find themselves in unlivable conditions.” While many tend to claim our state war veterans are "well-recompensed" for risking their …show more content…
At war, all veterans suffer through life-changing and traumatic experiences that will leave them scarred for the rest of their lives. Veterans deal with recurring memories and traumas, just playing in their heads. For some veterans, certain sounds, words, or objects trigger traumatic memories from war, which can lead to loss of self-control, along with possible injury to themselves. Veterans from all around the world have an increased risk of developing the following mental disorders: “Bipolar disorder, personality disorder, substance use disorder, schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety disorders” - (2020 National Veteran Report). Along with all of these, various mental disorders can often be the result of an even bigger problem, suicide. As the years go on, there have been alarmingly increasing rates of suicide among veterans. According to “The National Veteran Report” “From 2005 to 2018, there was a 47.1% increase in the number of suicide deaths in the U.S. adult population, including a 6.3% increase in the number of suicide deaths in the Veteran
