African Americans were forced to do jobs in slavery. Even though the children were this young they would still be punished. Carolyn Reeder stated “And hardest if your owner used cruel punishments or broke up your family by selling off a parent or sibling.” Many children would get separated from their family and would get sent to a different white owner. Depending on the owner children would work in fields or work inside taking care of other people. Even some children worked in commercial agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, mining, and domestic service. Slavery was very cruel for everyone of the slaves, but luckily later on there was this one man who changed this.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. He was the one who didn't like slavery and thought it should end. Abraham got many laws passed for the better. ‘After civil war, Southern states passed numerous laws restricting the rights of blacks, (black Codes). After these laws were passed some blacks might still had to be slaves because of the state they were in or their slave owner, because not every law was passed.
After Lincoln got in as president, 5 days after the surrender of confederate commanding general he got assassinated. John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham on April, 1865. After Lincoln got assassinated the next president was Andrew Johnson which was Abraham's vice-president. Lincoln said he always hated slavery as much as any abolitionist, so he made a change!
