Ever since the United States was first discovered, racism had reared its ugly head. Christopher Columbus, once thought to be a brave explorer, has actually been exposed as a mass murderer and even a sex slaver. It all started in 1492 when he set sail from Spain to find an easier and quicker trade route to Asia. Upon arrival in what is known today as the Bahamas, he quickly made contact with the natives. They were a very peaceful but naïve people, who all wore gold jewelry, which quickly caught the attention of Columbus. They were so non-combatant that when they were first shown a sword, “they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance.”(Howard, 1) Unfortunately, where the natives had shown kindness and compassion, Columbus saw a way for exploitation. “They would make fine servants.... With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want.” (Howard, 1) Upon returning to Spain, he convinced the Queen that if a return trip were funded, they would get more gold …show more content…
America is an independent country now, and the Louisiana Purchase has allowed Americans to move out West. People were nervous at first because of the Natives and the unpredictable weather. Then, the Homestead Act was passed, which made land in the West incredibly cheap as long as you farmed it. As more people moved out West, the buffalo were becoming more and more endangered. Very few people know that the western natives practically relied on the buffalo, since they provided everything the natives needed. Some native tribes were already attacking western settlers as they migrated over, but many tribes were becoming disgruntled with so many aliens coming over taking away their land and their way of life. As a result, many banded together in an attempt to make the settlers turn back. They fought against the Americans for a while in several brutal battles.
