Slavery Within North America Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, North America was prospering in its own way. The Native Americans who inhabited these lands lived without fear of being enslaved and coinhabited with other Natives and within the lands they dwelled in. Native Americans had their own moral codes and rules which allowed them to survive without much, but by only receiving and giving back to the earth. They were a spiritual people and respected others, knowing nothing of government, the use of currency, or the greed of killing for power and dominance. Concentrating on a specific Indian region we will observe each tribe concentrating on the Pacific Northwest and California, Midwest and North Plains and the Northeast. In the Northwest region it was highly populated with tribes because of its unlimited supply of natural resources. They lived in permanent settlements near water which was the bases of the creation for the need of a political system. Their system would be highly complex and they would have a leader for each tribe. They relied heavily on the water for food by hunting fish, such salmon. They also relied on the water to navigate routes to cross over regions over visit other tribes. They were identified by an animal or by a important resource that was in the region. The most diverse of this region was California which held tribes. Each tribe had a chief and they would speak about politics and they participated in trade. In the Midwest region the Indians were hunters and gatherers, which meant they had to constantly migrate to different areas. In order to migrate they adopted the use of riding horses so they can hunt and travel. They misted hunted buffalo making it a hunting game, and used all the resources they needed in order to survive. Such European countries were Portugal and Spain. In order to strengthen European and Portugal domaminace, they ventured off into the seas, such was the Atlantic Ocean, so they could economic power. At this time England and France were more focused on their own countries rather than venturing out into the seas in exploration. Portugal had established a trading network and traded gold for slaves, with West Africa, and secured a slave trade pact. The Spanish went into exploration to spread religion, having Chrisphoer Columbus to lead the voyage. Their settlement within the Americas had made the lives of the Indians complete torture by cutting off they ways to trade and live on there own lands. In the establishment of Jamestown in the new world, the colonist of England's goal was to settle on land way from Spain and the Indians. The journey to find land and gold was led by Captain Christopher Newport. Newport decided that they would build their town on the marshes along the James River. It is unclear why they chose this area but it is explained in the text, "Perhaps the colonists thought that, being in a marsh, they would be less likely to attract unwanted attention from the natives or Spanish.
