The most well known battle that Stalin was involved in is the Battles of Stalingrad. The Battle of Stalingrad started on July 17, 1942, and ended on February 2, 1943. The Russians consider it to be one of their greatest battles of the Great Patriotic War. This battle stopped the Germans from advancing into the Soviet Union. Nearly two million people were killed. The battle was fought in the city of Stalingrad, which is now Volgograd. Stalin refused to let any of the civilians evacuate. He was the Soviet Union’s sole leader for 29 years. Stalin is known as one of Russia’s most controversial leaders. Joseph was not the best leader. He did have some talents though. He could quickly come up with ideas. Although when something would go wrong, he would blame his subordinates. He did commit some catastrophic errors. Many critics say that the harsh Russian winter really helped him out in Russia’s win. Stalin did set many people up for failure. He gave them tasks that he knew they could not complete.
