One significant event in this period was the Columbian Exchange. It is such a significant event because it changed the demographic even to today’s society. The Columbian Exchange forcibly moved over 12 million Africans into slavery in America between the 16th and 19th centuries. The population quickly changed from almost all white to a peppered appearance with black and white individuals living in the same area. Had the Columbian Exchange not happened, there might have been no Civil War, no Confederate or Union, no money supply for America, no Abraham Lincoln, no segregation, no black and white facilites, no Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., no racial inequality and no President Obama (oops, did I really just say that?). The nation and the world would be a different place. Another significant event during the prescribed time period was the Civil War. This is significant because it devastated America’s population and destroyed the unity of the nation for the length of it. 620,000 soldiers from both sides of the gun died over the course of the war. He is known for fighting in battles, his tenure as president and cutting down that cherry tree, but to me, he is significant for another reason. He became the leader of a ragtag, out of shape nation that would fall apart once again if no one would lead them. Washington delivered ten fold.
