In the 1930’s more than 300 dust storms covered the southern great plains. The Dust Bowl also called “The Worst Hard Time” by writer Timothy Egan affected parts of Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma City, and Texas the hardest, but also carried topsoil “as far as Washington D.C. and New York City” (Background Essay).
