According to Joseph Campbell, there are four functions of the myth. These myths are there to teach us about various aspects of life such as maturing, adulthood, death, society, and human behavior. Here we discuss the third function that specifically relates to validating social order and belonging. In J.J.R. Tolkins The Hobbit, we watch Bilbo go through a transformation on his heroic journey. I believe this is where Bilbo finally gains a sense of belonging and acceptance in the group.

Bilbo and the group travel through the forest. They make it across the stream and face a few difficulties. Bilbo eventually falls asleep and wakes up without the group stuck to a giant spider web. He manages to free himself and kill the spider with his sword.
