Many retired football players today are dealing with the long lasting effects of concussions from the vigorous sport that they once played. Those now retired football players have played through the times when the communication between coaches and players on the field was rough and when officiating was always a controversy. Just like the players, fans are cursed with the constant thoughts of calls that cost their team a game. These things between fans and players are all issues in the game of football due to lack of technology. Thanks to technology there is now a way for both. Play calls had to be brought in through the substitute players running on and off the field. In the 1950’s the Cleveland Browns introduced a system to put in the quarterback’s helmets so they could communicate with him directly. Later down the road, in the 1990’s, the NFL approved a different type of system, though much like the one that was first thought of. "The system benefited from newer technology, along with better reliability and security: Messages now could be scrambled to keep other teams from listening in" (“Technology”). The new system makes each game move along faster since the process of getting a play call to the quarterback has been expedited. In addition to these new headset type devices, there are now tablets on the sidelines for each team. "As with the old system — but in a more immediate, flexible and efficient way — teams use the information to adjust play-calling and instruct their players as the game unfolds” (“Sideline of the Future”).
