How Does Texting Affect Teens

Statistics show that teenagers from ages 13 to 17 year olds has a rate of 3,339 text-messages per month. This shows that teens spend much of their time texting. Texting is a big distraction, especially for students. They get so focused on their mobile phones that they miss a lesson that their teacher just gave.
Teenager’s are distracted by cell phones because they are always texting. According to the Pew Research Center, 88% of teen cell phone users are text-messaging. They say that one in three teens sends more than 100 text messages a day, or 3,000 texts a month. A post on NBC News shows how this affects grades because, 47 percent of American high school or college students have failed one or more classes due to being distracted on social media. Getting too comfortable on social networks can serve as a threat to his or her personal well-being. Jasmin Paton mentions how, “there are approximately 845 million users on Facebook, 462 Twitter users, 135 million users on Linkedin, and 50 million users on Flickr.” In the 845 million users on Facebook, most of them are students. There are millions of users on social media and the interesting part is that most of them are students. It is important because 47 percent of them have failed one or more classes because of this. The Kaiser Family Foundation reported that children ages 8 to 18 spend 7 or more hours per day using social media networks. This is so distracting that The Federal Department of Transportation estimates that it causes more than 3,300 deaths every year. CNN News reported how social media websites, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter all show thousands of posts of people taking pictures while behind the wheel, and many driver selfies include accompanying texts. This was responsible for the deaths of 3,328 people nationwide in 2012, according to distraction.gov.
Some say that teenager’s who are using their cell phones are researching for classwork. They may be researching, but while they are doing that they are receiving notifications from Facebook, instagram, text-messages, etc… which is distracting them. A study done by Florida State University found that receiving a notification from your phone takes your focus completely off the task you were currently doing. These researchers also wrote that these notifications can prompt task, irrelevant thoughts, or mind-wandering, which has been shown to damage task
