Contention: we should change the date of Australia day

Australia day is a day people spend drinking, barbequing, running around with an Australian flag cape and all round enjoying the company of others however this isn’t how the indigenous commuity see this day, to them Australia day marks the beginning of the end for their freedom, the day white man came and destroyed their way of life. Calling for a change in the date of this day meant to celebrate one country being together as one that instead displays how the Australian way of life ‘is rooted in racism’ explains journalist Stan Grant at the IQ2 racism date and this racism is put on pedestal once a year on a day that should bring Australia together. Or there will be those who say ‘I didn’t do it’ and yes they may not have been around during the atrocities however everyone enjoys the benefits Australia has to offer, which has come from the expense of Aboriginal people. People need to learn to acknowledge this to understand why Aboriginal people oppose Australia day so much. The sorry speech by Kevin Rudd was just the beginning of making up for the cruelty inflicted upon the aboriginal community and changing Australia Day would be a perfect way to continue this rebuilding process. Proving that the government does actually care for the aboriginal people and didn’t just say the sorry to quieten the community. We need to prove that we care for the community and want to actually make up for the injustice inflicted upon Indigenous
