The monsters can teach us to survive, but they can also turn us into a monster in order to survive. In Elie Wiesel’s memoir, “Night”, there is a story of a young man who is so desperate to survive he steals bread from his own father. The boy kills his father and does not even realize what he has done. One of the sentences read, “When they withdrew, next to me were two corpses, side by side, the father and the son”. The son’s monster overtook him and killed, not only, something he loved, but he himself. It is better to learn from these creatures rather than letting them gain power. After 9-11, many people picked up habits that should not be needed. Civilians were carrying hidden guns and airports learned the importance of metal detectors. Everyone learned from the monster that is terrorism. They learned to be aware of the dangers in the world and, because of that lesson, they all had a little better chance of surviving.
