Relationships Under Pressure Imagine yourself miles from home in an unknown land with no one to accompany you except for the memory of your family, how would you survive? This was the reality for many Jews, Poles, Romanis, and Serbs during WWII in the concentration camps. The brutal environment in these concentration camps has caused strain to relationships between characters close to each other, and although they do their best, it is ultimately one man for himself. These concentration camps caused the survivors of the Holocaust to abandon their morals, their previous lifestyles, and most importantly, their old relationships with their family members to survive. The environment is a key factor in the change in relationships as the environment influences the morals of oneself and forces a struggle with one’s nature as seen with Elie’s relationship with his father when he first arrived at Auschwitz, and after he stayed for a few months. Lastly, although changes in relationships throughout the night seem mostly negative, without hardship, there is no further development, this shows us the message being portrayed in these moments: without negative aspects of life, there are no positive ones. An example of this is Elie’s higher value of the family after the loss of his sister and mother, which causes him to appreciate the old life that he had and to stay with his father despite their hardships. “As for me, I was thinking not about death but about not wanting to be separated from my
