Are We Obligated to Give to Those In Need? A lot of people instinctively help the needy. They believe that it is a good moral thing to do. However, that is dependent on other influences by society. The story, Night, by Elie Wiesel, contains this idea of people that are in a state of desperation, which would be people affected by the Holocaust. This can be connected to others responding to these people in desperation, helping them or giving things to the needy. As people, we are not entirely obligated to give things to those who are in need, however, it's the surrounding motives that determine whether you help/donate to the needy or not. This shows that even though you think something is correct to do, someone else may have other opinions. Since other people tell you if something is right or wrong, this means that society can change who you end up helping out or whether you help people at all or not. The next reason why we are not entirely obligated to help the needy is because the action of helping can be a way society values people. People who help certain people are considered to be better people. This can be seen in the article, “The Third Wave,” where there is a study showing this. This article states, “people willingly create a sense of superiority over others, this can justify people doing horrible things in the name of the state’s honor.” This quote shows us that people may end up thinking that helping certain people/organizations may make them better than everyone
