I Am One of You Forever adds fantasy to reality to make us believe and apply to the readers emotions of what actually happened because we look into our fantasy to find truths, fantasy helps people cope with real world problems and to understand reality. Fantasy is the action of free imagination of the impossible. Reality is the true everyday world around you.
There are various levels of magic in I Am One of You Forever. The first magic level is “the world of the child’s receptive imagination is one of an easy and comfortable coexistence of the real and the fantastic, the natural and the supernatural, the ordinary and the legendary-- a world perceived as constantly undergoing fascinating transformations and transfigurations”(Campbell). Our memory could be faulty and selectively remembered that certain things would get covered up by emotions, new thoughts, the unconscious would take over, and you would forget certain things that might be important. Chappell believes that “the past, if we captured it all, must be imagined, created, or even dreamed”(Campbell). In I Am One of You Forever, Chappell is familiarizing a world of “the good time”(Campbell). “A dream of midsummer in which the “bright happy day started past us like minnows,” a time when “it seems we were laughing and joking from one hour to the next”(Chappell 21). The major magic, “ is the transformation of life to art, the ability of the human imagination to shape the raw materials if a shifting, always--disappearing, and the time-bound existence to the real of permanent and unchanging”(Campbell). In Chappell’s novels, the places are real, but the actions of the characters are fantasy.
