It was this behind-the-scenes work that I had the opportunity to jump head-first into as a paralegal at a business immigration law firm. By drafting petitions, applications, and contacting clients with document requests and updates on their cases, I quickly became acquainted with various forms and letter templates that were entirely new to me. Having studied literature and philosophy, it was an adjustment to learn and adhere to the government guidelines and filing requirements in addition to the expectations and standards the attorneys had for petitions and applications. It was an unanticipated challenge, and yet, it was one I took in stride, savoring the fact that I was learning something new every day. It was also over the course of those first few weeks that my desire to pursue law school was strengthened. With every visa approval notice and petition filed, our client’s lives changed, and my confidence and understanding of business immigration law grew
