I was born and raised in Yemen. I come from a family of ten, two parents and eight children. As a family, we moved to the US when I was seventeen years of age. I was therefore enrolled in a high school for me to complete my high school education. During this time, I encountered various challenges at school, and most of them revolved around the fact that I belonged to the few ethnic minority groups in the US. One of the main challenges was the issue of language barrier. It was difficult to communicate effectively with my peers and teachers at school. She has placed two years ahead of her real grade. I knew her to be excellent both socially and academically at her class level. Due to the experiences, I shared I with her I wrongly assumed that all the ethnic minority groups were knowledgeable. With regards to the knowledge I have gained about the some of the problems that immigrant student encounter on an everyday basis, I can admit that my self-description of my characteristics are right. For instance, I had always described myself as a defender though I thought myself more in the lines of guarding students who were unable to defend themselves from the discrimination of other and those who could not be accepted into the society because they were thought to behave differently. I later began to describe myself as a defender but more in the lines of respect and supporting the equal treatment of every student especially those who came from an ethnic minority group than the dominant ethnic groups. As well, I described myself as a diligent person since I strive to embrace ethnic diversity and accept the people who do not share my culture. I accomplished all these by managing to associate with other students on an individual level. Since he was the sole provider for our family, I was forced to drop out of high school to support my family. I assumed the role of a provider, and it involved taking care of all the financial expenses at home. I was forced to work odd jobs due to my prior lack of working experience and poor communication skills due to my poor English. I thus had to take multiple low paying jobs due to my limited choice of work. I remember working in a very busy restaurant, busboy, waiter, chef and lastly as filling manager before I left to embark on my studies. Throughout this time, I failed to give up despite being paid very poorly. I was inspired each minute knowing that I would get out of this situation and go back to studying. Besides, I learned a lot during that time; I sharpened my social skills and English as well. Most of the time, I was able to interact with my colleagues and customers. They understood that I was different from them and thus through them I was able to learn extensively about the American culture and
