Between the time periods of 1880 and 1990, U.S cities grew rapidly. The reasons being that the industry was growing, and because the industry was growing, immigrants from
Southern and Eastern Europe came. 1 Because the immigrants were coming from different spots around the world, the U.S was referred to as a “melting pot” due to the mixing of races, cultures and languages. 2 Around 15 million people came. Along with these immigrants came positive effects, but also negative effects. “Noise, traffic jams, slums, air pollution and sanitation and health problems became commonplace.” 3 “ Urban problems in the late 19th & early 20th centuries were the result of immigration to the United States” because of exclusion acts, and poor living

Today the government, in terms of keeping the industry safe and moving, has changed a lot. It has changed because now we are more worried about keeping the worker safe. Life was difficult back then because they were more unfair, and gave unfair wages and unsafe jobs. Also people didn’t have to get interviews to get the jobs. Manufacturing jobs also use to consist of hard labor, and they worked in hazardous or unsafe environments. Now the
