Society tells a person to be themselves in order to be accepted, but often contradicts itself when people is placed apart based on what the believe, where they come from or who they love. Why must someone be considered negatively different and placed apart just because of who they love and the way they lead their life if it is not hurting anybody else? The differences that people set in between them and others are the ones that cause troubles for the simple idea that there are no need for those markings, "The best day will be when we no longer talk about being gay or straight- it's not a 'gay wedding' it's just a 'wedding'" (Pink). That night the police raided a well-known gay bar called Stonewall Inn, the bar was located in Greenwich Village in New York City. Police were able to arrest people for being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender and would often be thrown to prison for it was illegal to be part of the LGBTQ community, this gave them an advantage when raiding any bar. "The act of homosexual sex, even in private homes, was punishable by a light fine, 20 years in prison, or even a life sentence." (PBS) The night the New York police decided to raid the bar they did not take accounted that people were going to stand up to them and create what could be called the first big movement towards equal rights. After this event took place, a year later LGBTQ people marched the streets of New York in memory of those who lost their lives and to remind people that they would keep on fighting, this was marked as the first Pride Parade in history.
