In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a type of assisted reproductive technology, used to treat infertility. The process involves fertilising the egg with sperm in an incubator outside the body, then transferring the best embryo back into the woman’s uterus, with the hopes of achieving a pregnancy. This method would be beneficial to the couple as it was found that Mark has a low sperm count and Jane’s number of eggs was minimal. Advantages of IVF treatment include the following. It has been used for a long time, and therefore has developed to become a safe practice. It has been proven to be more successful than IUI (Intrauterine insemination) and other forms of assisted reproductive technology. There is a greater chance that they will finally fulfil their dreams of raising a child. IVF can help to diagnose further reproductive issues. The negatives of IVF can include the following. IVF may be unsuccessful, with only 25% of the couples starting a cycle achieving a live birth. As a medical treatment, it comes with a chance of developing side effects, including the risk of infection, anaesthetic risk, haemorrhage and the most severe of them being ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). My reasoning for this including they will be able to fulfil their dreams of raising a child. They may be raising a child who otherwise may have been in an abusive or violent upbringing. I also believe with both members of the couple have fertility issues and it was suggested by IVF specialist that their chances of conceiving the other two options are quite expensive and take a psychological and emotional treatment, and are never guaranteed a child.
