Over the course of Introduction to Theater, we have learned about the many aspects of theatre including the different jobs, roles, and functions of the director to the actor to the designers of plays and so much more. Participation as an audience member for the three required plays helped us to see our lectures played out before us. Lovers + Players by Kathryn Walat, The Children's Hour by Lillian Hellman, and Ajax in Iraq by Ellen McLaughlin were presented well by the College. Within this paper, it will discuss how costume and its functions among these three plays functions in the same and even different approach but overall presents the story the director envisioned.
Lovers + Players, it is a slapstick comedy with some very over the top

For example, Flavio, portrayed by Williams Rutkowski, had on the bubble shirts and pants that resembled the actual period but he also had on a modernized baseball cap and high top shoes. The same is seen for Isabella, portrayed by Gibson Carter, who was the daughter of a rich father and clothing reflected the clothes of a rich female in that time with the lavish dress and shoes however her dressed looked more of that which you see in the common day fairy tales. When looking at The Children's Hour, there is a definite difference in the costume. Where Lovers + Players is more colorful, loud, and over the top, the audience sees the simplicity and more updated feel to the costumes in The Children's Hour by the costume designer Tiffany Jacobs. The time of the play is 1934 and with the introduction of Karen Wright, portrayed by Caroline Connell, the fashion sense of that time is seen immediately. None of the soldiers had an abundance of color throughout the play. Ajax, was covered in blood most if not the entire play and his solider uniform was red would can signify that bloody, war theme. Throughout the play, it is almost like a forced happiness to make it through in Iraq when really they were down. The same can be applied to The Children's Hour, once Karen and Martha had lost the case Karen stayed in her blue dress that can signify sadness and a grey sweater that seemed depressing on its own. Karen constantly pulled at the sweater wrapping it tighter around her but I saw it as sadness and depression holding her tighter and tighter. Lovers + Players on the other hand managed to keep a happy mood throughout the play. The one scene where Rosalinda, portrayed by Kat Wensel, changed from the bright costume to her black, more rebellious costume to show how she was fed up with being the good girl everyone had presumed her to be. Overall, all three play's costume managed to set the mood and allow for its changed based on costume
