James Martin was born on the 3rd of January 1901, to parents Amelia and Charles Martin in NSW and was the third child of 6 children. The family moved to Melbourne but struggled financially causing them to move into several homes before settling in Hawthorn in 1910, which is also when he started attending Manningtree Road State school until 1915. As a child, James was always interested in military-related roles and events and was very keen to be part of the junior cadets, and at the age of 12, he joined.
Enlistment –
When the war started in July 1914, there was lots of excitement in Australia and lots of men wanted to enlist. In January of 1915, James moved to Maldon to find work on his Aunt and uncles farm. They camped at the aerodrome camp at Heliopolis, and officially joined the battalion mid-August. James was assigned to the 4th platoon and was in the same section as Cecil James Hogan, a close friend he had acquired throughout the long duration of the voyage. He was 16 years of age and had also enlisted against his parent’s will.
On the 27th of August, the 21st Battalion broke camp and was deployed a few days later abroad the southland ship to Gallipoli. During this voyage, on the 2nd of September, the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. James and many other men spent hours in the ocean before being rescued. He eventually landed on Gallipoli on the morning of September 7th and took up position near Wire Gully.
