Kennedy’s personal achievements made him an extremely respected individual. Being the youngest American president of all time showed that he was a very knowledgeable and experienced leader, despite his young age. In 1940, Kennedy (who was a part of the Navy during WWII at the time) and his crew were operating a PT boat when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo, killing two and injuring the rest of his crew. Kennedy managed to swim to an island 3 12 miles away with his crew while dragging some of his crew behind him who were unable to swim. Kennedy eventually led his crew to being rescued while evading Japanese ships that may spot them. This is one of the most prominent reasons why JFK is an American hero because this shows how much he cares for the people of his country and the limits he is willing to go for them.
