Procter only cares about his name and refuses to admit the affair to anyone even his wife, but in the end, he admits it after innocent lives are taken because of false witchcraft. “I thought better of it since,” said Proctor (pg. 48), this quote shows that Proctor shoots down any talk of him going to Salem because that is where Abigail resides and he doesn't want his wife thinking he is continuing the affair. “I have known her,” said proctor (pg 102), This quote shows that Proctor finally admitted to the affair but his intentions were not that of tragic heroes. He only admitted to the affair because his wife was about to be executed, not because he wanted to save the innocent lives that were already taken or he wanted to be free of the sin. In a way, he liked that he had a sin with Abigail because he didn’t want to ruin her reputation so she couldn’t get a job and he showed deep love for her. He only admitted to the affair when he was about to be a widower and couldn't take that.
John Proctor is not a tragic hero because he's prideful, self-absorbed, and unloyal to his family. Proctor finds ways to fight off the affair well wanting to continue it, therefore, he is not a tragic hero. John Proctor only fits into higher stature in the definition of a tragic hero.
