Joint functions are related capabilities and activities placed into six basic groups: command and control (C2), intelligence, fires, movement and maneuver, protection, and sustainment to help joint force commanders synchronize, integrate, and direct joint operations (JP 3-0). The joint functions work together to facilitate planning, synchronize, and direct joint operations. For some of this joint functions the effective integration and synchronization could be significantly challenging during combat operations.
Command and control encompasses the exercise of authority and direction by a commander over assigned and attached forces to accomplish the mission. The Joint Forces Commander (JFC) provides operational vision, guidance, and direction to the joint forces throughout the operational area (OA).
The intelligence function supports this understanding by providing integrated, evaluated, analyzed, and interpreted information concerning foreign nations, hostile or potential hostile forces of relevance or areas of actual or potential operations. Intelligence tells …show more content…
Joint fires are those delivered during the employment of forces from two or more components in coordinated action to produce desired results in support of a common objective. Fires typically produce destructive effects but various non-lethal ways and means such as electronic attacks can be employ with little or no physical destruction.
Movement and Maneuver encompasses the disposition of joint forces to conduct operations by securing positional advantages before or during combat operations and by exploiting tactical success to achieve operational and strategic objectives.
