Judge Danforth was a judge in the New England area during the Salem witchcraft trials but most importantly he was a strict Puritan. In the movie his is a very selfish proud character and because of that he was so invested in the conviction of people even after many people believe he had gone too far.
The puritan beliefs and practices that every one including judge Danforth is what truly contributed to the hanging of so many innocent people. Everyone was so terrified of the idea of the devil that very little proof was needed to scare everyone into a frenzy.
