It can be difficult to feel the impact leaders like Dr. King Jr. and their followers have on the lives of the world population today. In the United States have been rejected and smeared by the president. The Department of Homeland Security end[ed] such protections for more than 200,000 Salvadorans. King’s death had a huge impact and was remembered in many ways. He is remembered for allowing the lifestyles of many to changed for the better. Our rememberence shows that his actions still have an impact today and that humankind is forever grateful for what he did. As Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General stated, “Decades after his death, he continues to inspire all those around the world who are struggling for human rights and human dignity in the face of oppression, discrimination and injustice.”(UN) Since 1986 there has been a Martin Luther King Jr. day, “an official U.S. federal holiday to honor him. The day chosen is his birthday, January 15th, and is celebrated the third Monday of every January.” (Bobleter) Dr. King’s death not only impacted America, it impacted nations worldwide. At the Olympic Games held in Mexico a few weeks following the murder, colored champions raised their fist on while standing on the podium and turned their backs to US flag. (herodote) While he was alive even lawforce was resisting change in favor of equality. Even policeman, used unecessary violence to punish Afro-Americans. However, he is one of only four non-presidents to be honored with a memorial in Washington DC’s National Park.
