1. Before starting, think about the different types of beaks and how they might influence the calories that birds need to survive and to reproduce.
Which bird beak is most likely to survive? ______large________ Which bird beak is most likely to reproduce? ___large___________
2. Select one type of beak from the four types that you have. Spend 5 minutes or so and practice picking up different food items with your beak.
3. If possible, enlist the help of another person to act as the timekeeper. When the signal is given, you have 15 seconds to put as many of one type of food item as possible into the bird’s stomach. You can only put in one food item at a time and you can only use one hand to maneuver the bird beak.
4. After feeding, count the number of food items for your beak type and record that data in Table 1.
5. Repeat the feeding using your same beak with each of the different food types. Then switch to another beak type and repeat all of the feeding experiments.

6. Use your data from Table 1 to fill in the needed information and calculations in Table 2. TABLE 2: Data Analysis

PART TWO
1. Before watching the video, you will be assigned two of the following groups of animals to summarize presented information.
(a) hammerhead sharks (c) giraffes (b) cuttlefish and octopi (d) humans
2. Watch the following video on the evolution of shape in animals. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsHEAnPX59Y).
3. Take notes on the presented information of your two groups of animals. cuttlefish appeared around same time as sharks;400 million years ago. they have no shell crawl in small areas and has made them better hunters cousins to octopus can change color in seconds to adapt to surroundings to hide from predators, is lined with color producing cells they have “electric skin”
octopus had no bones just elastic muscle developed mimic 50 million years ago
humans have a unique shape
