Political discourse, media portrayal, and legislative decisions have all contributed to the historical legacy of systemic discrimination that has impacted American society's opinions of crime and criminality, particularly with regard to Latinx hate crimes. Social perceptions of crime are also influenced by political discourse and policy choices.
