According to EqualityNow.org, “At least 20.9 million adults and children are bought and sold worldwide into commercial sexual servitude, forced labor and bonded labor.” This number is partially due to the fact that some countries have legalized prostitution, opening the floodgates for sex trafficking. If prostitution would be legalized here in the US, many negative effects would be produced. Although many arguments support the legalization of prostitution, it still violates women's dignity, equality, health, integrity, and security. Some say that legalizing prostitution would professionalize the women involved. Unfortunately, that is incorrect in many ways. Being that prostitution relies heavily on anonymity, women do not want to register as a prostitute due to the social stigma that would be put on them. It would also label them as a “lesser person.” Also, when countries such as Germany, have legalized prostitution, it creates an industry that looks for a certain type of woman. In countries that have legalized prostitution, women have been required to undergo monthly tests for STDS to make sure they are healthy. Unfortunately, once a month is not nearly enough to contain an STD outbreak. Also, it is pointless to just test the females because a male would be able to transfer diseases very rapidly especially if they indulge in sexual activities very often. It barely takes anything to transfer an STD and once it's there, it is very difficult if not impossible to eliminate. Furthermore, is integrity. In such a secretive business that the general population does not talk about, it is hard to fix internal problems in the system. Nowadays if issues occur, women are typically silenced in order to stay alive. Men are very controlling in prostitution and do not give women any respect because they view them as lesser beings. Also, many women do not reach out to officials when they have been abused, contributing to the already hidden prostitution
