During Pi’s life and travels, he believes and studies the aspects of three different religions. He lives his life by them and focuses on them very deeply. One of the religions he followed very deeply was hinduism. He believesd very deeply in their values, and what they stood for. This played a key role in aiding in his survival on the boat. Due to his religious beliefs, he was a vegetarian, therefore he consumed no meat. This led him eating any small thing he could. It made survival that much harder. For most of his journey, he was alone with Richard Parker. Many times did Pi go hungry, hallucinate due to his dehydration and crave any sort of food. He followed the teachings very closely. Out of all the religions he has studied and taken part in, Islam stood out the most to Pi. He sacrificed many different things for his religion. He was a very spiritual young man. During the beginning it took awhile for Pi to discover his true faith. “He seems to be attracting religions the way a dog attracts fleas” (pg, 82. ch, 27). Pi believed you did not have to follow one religion, but rather you could have faith in many different ones. He started to wonder if he was going to survive. Although the fear of everything around him had grown, he had lost all fear of death. He was much more concerned about the well being of Richard Parker than his own life. “I came to the sad conclusion that I could no longer take care of Richard Parker. I had failed as a zoo keeper. I was more affected by his imminent demise than I was my own” (pg, 268. ch, 90). Through this moment of sadness and fear, Pi’s religion was always there for him.
