Theo 215: World Religion Malcolm X: Essay
I chose to do my essay on Malcolm X. In my essay analysis I will discuss Malcolm X’s experiences and his conversions from being born into a Christian family to the Nation of Islam and later takes up Sunni Islam. The Sunni is the largest branch in Islam because it has the most followers under its branch. I will discuss how the Islam religion addresses an ethical and emotional dimension. Another character I will look at in this film is one of Malcolm X’s assassinators Thomas Hagan I will address his regrets and his teachings. He was following under Nation of Islam at the time. There were many controversies as to what led him to do such a horrid act. I had to read further on it because the film didn’t give much depth on that. I analyzed that Thomas thought his teachings and beliefs were right but later took them back when he realized that it was wrong. (Press, Associated. "Thomas Hagan”) He left the Nation of Islam but he still considered himself Muslim. He said in interviews that he was lied to under his faith because at the time he was uneducated and following blindly. As stated in our readings Muslims believe in “The One and Only God” which is Allah. Muslims are supposed to submit to their religion. (. World RELG 3). Muslims have the book Quran which states laws that must be followed, they forbid drinking, adultery, and killing those are reasons why I suspect that in the film they was an ethical approach. Another dimension I want to point out is the Emotional dimension after the assassination of Malcolm X Thomas Hagan went through an emotional turmoil. From dreading what he did to guilt and devoting himself to become a better person. He was searching for inner peace, he had to leave the Nation of Islam but he still considered himself Muslim even though he didn’t follow under a branch.
