The Manor System is a system in which the lord set rights and obligations with his serfs. The lord will provide the serfs with housing, farmland, and protection from bandits and in return, the serfs would take care of the lord's land and watch over his animals. All peasants had certain duties to the lord, and it is at least a couple days of labor a week.
Most peasants rarely ever traveled 25 miles away from their own manor because everything that they needed was close. Manors usually only covered a few miles. Around 15-30 families lived in a village on the manor. A stream or a pond could be created in the village and when this happened fish would end up there and this was a big part of their diets. There was also a mill that was used for grinding grain. The manor was the only place that they needed to go because all the grain was produced by the peasants. There were only a few outside items that they could not made in the manor like iron and salt. There were many different thing grown in the manor like wheat, rye, and barley. Sefs living in small cottages with only about 2 rooms which meant there was one for living quarters and another one for cooking. All the floors in the cottages were dirt so there were many bugs. There was not a variety of foods to eat so a basic diet was vegetables, bread, grain, cheese, and soup. While living in the manor there were a lot of taxes. The lord could tax what he wanted and bread was one of them. If you made your own it would be a crime. Marriages would also have to go through the lord and he had to approve. Once he approved he would also tax you for getting married. Living conditions were not easy in the manor, but people got through
