This can simply be defined as a graduate level nursing education. There has been some debate of importance for the mastery level nurse. Over the last 30 years this has been questioned many times. There has been some research conducted to determine the relationships between patient outcomes and masters level practicing nurses. The findings were in favor of mastery level nurse education. These studies reflect a significant reduction in the patient mortality rate in both the US and Europe (Clark, Casey, & Morris, (2015).
Nurses who are educated at a mastery level may interpret things differently than non-mastery nurses due to their training and education. There is a greater ability to assess situations in an abstract fashion due to theoretical focus. This could be related to a combination of psychological and physical characteristics. The AACN and QSEN continue to assist education programs in designing the teachings to produce successful nurses in practice. It is the duty of the nurse to be sure to maintain a level of competence and skill to perform to the best of his or her ability. Collaboration and teamwork are both crucial to quality care, safety, and successful patient outcomes. Utilizing practices such as shift handoff can be beneficial in achieving good collaboration of care. SABR for example, which stand for situation, background, assessment, recommendation, and patient, can be used to enhance communication, quality, and patient safety (Kear, 2016). This competency can be achieve through good communication, skill, knowledge, participation, and respect for other members of the team. Mastery level nursing practice is emerging as an important element to the nursing and healthcare team. Advanced practice nurses usually derive from mastery trained and educated nurses. Continuation of education through a accredited nursing program is the best way to achieve the mastery level nursing
