Names and the Meaning Behind Them
Name; noun. a word or set of words by which a person, animal, place, or thing is known, addressed, or referred to. Names are very important to many people. Some people have names with special meanings or names that have been in their families for generations. Names are a way to identify everyone and add to their personality and shape who they are. Many names have a special meaning or originate from one word or language. Some people prefer to be called by their middle name rather than their first name because they like it better. Names are part of who we are, they identify us and help to make everyone their own unique person.
My full name is Sophie Katherine Trafton. Sophie is originally derived from ancient Greek, but came to be a French name and means wisdom in Greek. I was named Sophie after my grandmother. Her name was Sonya and while Sophie and Sonya don’t sound that much alike, they both come from the ancient Greek word Sophia. Katherine is a name that I share with my mom and great grandmother. My mom and I have Katherine as our middle names, but my great grandmother’s first name was Katherine. Katherine is a pretty common middle name, but is usually spelled with a c. I got to pick this part of my name, so it’s not part of my “real” legal name, but it’s still my name. My confirmation name is Teresa. As part of my confirmation I had to pick a name that was also a saint’s name, so I picked Teresa after Saint Teresa. This name is important to me because it represents my religion and I got to pick this name. I picked Teresa because I liked the way that it sounded and Saint Teresa was an amazing person and role model. Even though I picked the name Teresa in second grade I still like it and it reminds me of Saint Teresa and who I was when I picked that
