In today’s society, people are more exposed to varieties types of media, especially social media as we are living in an Information Era that allows us to exchange information freely in a short time. As most of the people nowadays have been using social media in their daily lives, social media had been one of the sources for people to deliver persuasive messages even though some of it is not true and beneficial. We also can easily be influenced by what has been shown by the social media. One of the bad effects of the social media is the arising issue in which woman starts to concern about their body image and think that there is only one ideal and perfect body. One example of a social media that people have been using is Instagram. Instagram is a social media that allows us to take pictures or videos and share with other people. In an article written by Sarah Gervais with a title, Does Instagram Promote Positive Body Image, it is said that social media (including Instagram) allows their users to reclaim photography as a source of approval. She also claims that the domineering nature of photography in the media gives people false perception about beauty. For example, if we take a look at the photos in the social media, we can see that most of the body of the people in the photos seems so flawless in every angle—they are extremely thin and have no single marks on their body. It gives people especially women a lot of pressures until it has successfully predisposed women’s behavior till they are willing to do extreme things for the sake of having that so-called perfect size and shape.
