The role of a Medical Transcriptionist in the medical setting is as follow:
The MT’s play a very important role in patient safety and risk management.
MT’s have to provide careful documentation to make it easier to identify medical inconsistencies and to correct them.
The MT’s is a “medical language specialist who transcribes dictation by physicians and other healthcare providers in order to document patients care”.

Always follow the supervisors lead at first till you know what to do for sure. Never make up words to avoid leaving a blank. To protect the MT’s from legal issues they can buy liability insurance to cover themselves – called errors and omissions.

C. How does HIPAA play a role in medical transcription? (pg 3, 11 and 12)
Employees of Hillcrest Medical Center must sign a statement acknowledgement this confidentiality policy and must attend an orientation session regarding the HIPAA. Violations of this policy will result in immediate disciplinary action. The purpose for HIPAA are to protect the integrity of protected health information through all reasonable means. Which also includes protecting of computer passwords, logging out of database when done. Be sure computer is facing away from people or traffic to ensure privacy of patients. Use as shredder to destroy documents. MT’s must comply too the HIPAA requirements just as all the Allied Health members have to comply too the code of Ethics. It is all about the privacy and integrity of the
